About Janine

Counselling with Janine Thompson

For over the past decade, I have combined my experience in both public and private sectors of counselling and psychotherapy. As a result, I create a confidential space where people of all backgrounds can compassionately explore themselves. Uncovering their challenges, stressors and values.

I support people through tough times, providing them the skills and methods to live their richest lives. While, above all, maintaining the understanding that there is no shame in asking for help and no better time than the present moment to find joy.

I work with individuals and couples of all abilities, ages, genders and sexual orientations who are impacted by a myriad of adverse life circumstances. Whether you have lost a loved one, are having trouble finding joy or have survived a traumatic event, I will be by your side through your therapeutic journey.

My several years of education and many years work experience in mental health and substance use provides me with considerable knowledge in a variety of areas that impact psychological well-being: particularly in struggles involving unresolved grief, loss of a loved one, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress.

Additional areas I support people with are anxiety, life-stage transitions, low self-esteem, survivors of abuse, parenting struggles, relationship and family conflicts.

I offer online or phone counselling services. Please do not hesitate to call or email and let’s get the conversation started.

My Education and Training

I completed a Master of Social Work with a specialisation in clinical counselling from the University of Calgary. Before this I completed my Bachelor of Social Work and Social Work diploma with honours marks. Each of my degrees and diploma included extensive hours of supervised practicums. Practicums allowed me to practice and hone my professional skills under accomplished experienced professionals in the field. I am currently a member in good standing with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (BCCSW) and the BC Association of Social Workers (BCASW).

As a Registered Social Worker with the BCCSW I adhere to the professional standards described by the BCCSW http://www.bccollegeofsocialworkers.ca/public/

Social Workers focus on enhancing the well-being of individuals, families and communities within the context of the well-being of society. Social Workers believe in the dignity and worth of human beings. They promote social fairness and equal access and distribution of resources and opportunities. Social Workers help people facing difficult life challenges including mental and physical illness; grief and loss; poverty; discrimination; abuse; addiction; divorce; unemployment; disability and educational problems. Social Workers…provide counselling and support services; mediate conflict; advocate for services; and strengthen clients’ capacity to successfully manage their problems.”
